ANCIENT SYMBOLS & MYTHICISM

The Solar Cross

Perhaps the oldest traced mythic and religious symbol in human culture, and spontaneously shared across the globe.

In Pagan traditions, the Solar Cross represents the calendar year and the four seasons that marked a year's beginning, middle, and end. Often, a God and Goddess are associated with the duty to carry the wheel, and to tend the cycling of the seasons.

In Native American as well as Aboriginal and many other Indigenous traditions, the same symbol represents the four cardinal directions. The Four Directions simultaneously represent the inherent connection by space and time between all life, creatures, and plants. This symbol describes the cycling seasons, as well as the changing winds and weather, and also describes the life cycle and certain generational attributes of developing social life. The four sections of the symbol may be ascribed colors which represent particular life paths of the directions and the diverse lessons learned while walking them.
